The heated amethyst (common glass) is a variety of quartz, a mineral composed of silica (SiO2). Its purple color is due to the presence of traces of iron and titanium. When the amethyst is heated to a temperature of about 400-500 °C, the iron present in the mineral changes oxidation status from Fe3+ (which gives it the purple color) to Fe2+ (which has no color). As a result, the heated amethyst becomes yellow, orange or brown.
